Becoming a Supporter isn't an obligation, it's a decision that relies on you, in case you want to pay and support (as the status name indicates) the site in exchange of some perks, just like the one you did mention of changing your username, as an example - if you aren't able to afford it, then just don't pay for it, and stay with your current username. It's as simple as that, there's no need from your part to insult Tom Fulp, as it's a fair trade, and the money helps him maintain these grounds up, and alive.
